The Applied Mathematics Research Group in the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis at the School of Science is seeking for a
Doctoral Candidate in Applied Mathematics
to work under the supervision of Prof. Vanni Noferini. Specifically, the candidate will work on the theme of “Non-backtracking centrality measures and beyond’’. Areas of mathematics that are relevant include matrix theory, complex network analysis, numerical linear algebra, graph theory and statistics. The main goal of the project is to perform further research on some recently introduced centrality measures based on the combinatorics of non-backtracking and more generally non-cycling walks in a graph. The project will include the study of potential applications of centrality measures to various disciplines such as biology, economics and finance, and the candidate is expected to also coordinate with international researchers in these disciplines.
The candidate will start in September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Candidates interested in more details about the project are welcome to contact Prof. Vanni Noferini, [email protected]
- Master’s degree in Mathematics, or equivalent on a related discipline
- Good command of English
- Strong drive towards excellence in science and technology at the highest international level
Some experience on the areas of mathematics most relevant to the project is appreciated; an interest in one or more of the scientific disciplines where potential applications can arise is also valued. Knowledge of at least one scientific computing programming language, e.g., MATLAB or R, is highly desirable.
